Sugar House
The perfect combination of residential and commercial make up the Salt Lake County community of Sugar House. The civic-minded population has transformed a tough neighborhood into a desirable community in recent years through an aggressive redevelopment program. To their credit, those residents and community leaders have polished a diamond in the rough and real estate is in higher demand here than ever before.
Small businesses in Sugar House keep the business local and the business community tight-knit. Independent business owners peddle shoes, music, art, coffee and clothing on the streets of Sugar House. The neighborhood is located from about 500 East on the west to 2000 East and 1300 South to about 3300 South. The area is becoming so popular in fact, that even business owners outside those borders use the Sugar House name to establish its presence in what’s becoming a prestigious community.
One might expect Sugar House to have a sweet history of sugar-making, but the truth is, no sugar was ever manufactured there. The name is believed to have come from an incomplete sugar mill that was scrapped due to difficulties in its construction. In fact, the truth about Sugar House is a little less sweet than sugar. Some would find it downright bitter. You see, the community was home to the first Utah State Prison in the 19th century. There aren’t any lingering structures from the prison, but its very existence there makes for a good story all the same.
Sugar House Park is a favorite green space among locals with 110.5 acres of green lawns, and equipment for all kinds of organized and impromptu sports. While many people visit the park just to soak in the beauty of the green, the surrounding mountains and the lush trees, many others flock there for activities like the Independence Day fireworks show. It’s huge!
Many other fairs and exhibits are held in beautiful Sugar House Park where community members come together to share commonalities and explore differences.
